Residential & Interior Designer in Bethesda, MD
Bethesda is a place where houses are asked to grow. Many were built between the 1920s and the 1960s for a different pattern of family life, and the neighborhoods around them have matured into some of the most desirable in the region. Talha Gursoy designs additions, whole-house renovations, and reworked main floors for Bethesda homeowners who would rather refine a good house than replace it.
Colonials, Capes, and mid-century ramblers
The housing stock records several waves of growth. Edgemoor and the older streets near downtown hold brick and stucco Colonial Revival and Tudor-influenced houses from the years between the wars. Neighborhoods such as Wood Acres add postwar Cape Cods and Colonials, and brick ramblers and pockets of mid-century modern design appear farther out. Across all of them, new homes have steadily replaced older ones, so a single street can hold several generations of house styles side by side.
Adding space with a light hand
Most Bethesda projects begin with a question of fit. A Cape Cod may have room to grow upward, but its roofline is part of what gives the street its scale. A center-hall Colonial usually invites a rear addition that brings the kitchen and family room together, provided the new mass does not overwhelm the original house or the garden. Mature trees, existing grades, and the relationship to neighboring houses shape where an addition can go as much as the floor plan does. Talha studies several massing options early, in plan and in section, before committing to one direction.
Permits and review in Montgomery County
Residential building permits in Bethesda are issued by the Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services (DPS), and zoning standards come from the county’s Zoning Ordinance. Additions that disturb a meaningful area of ground can bring sediment control, stormwater, and tree canopy requirements into the scope. Properties within a designated historic district, or listed in the county’s Master Plan for Historic Preservation, also need a Historic Area Work Permit reviewed by the Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission. Because Boss Design Center builds what Talha draws, these requirements are priced and scheduled while the design is still flexible.
